Steam Has No Accent

Towel not in the water, please,（タオルは お湯に入れないでください）the small sign reads.（と 小さな貼り紙）I fold it on my head, like each（たたんで 頭に載せる まわりの）old woman, neat.（おばあさんたちみたいに きちんと）

I'm paid to carry every word,（言葉5を運ぶのが 私の仕事）this week, it hurts,（今週は それがこたえる）my mouth is full of someone's terms,（口の中は 誰かの用語でいっぱい）here, nothing works.（ここでは どれも通じない）

I lower in, up to my jaw,（あごまで ゆっくり沈む）shoulders, then all,（肩まで そして すっぽり）I close my eyes, the steam is soft,（目を閉じる 湯気はやわらかい）and nothing's taught.（説明は 何もいらない）Steam has no accent寄, nor does heat,（湯気に訛りはない 熱にもない）we all agree.（みんな うなずいてる）

Down under all the frozen slate,（凍った岩の ずっと下で）still warm寄, awake,（まだ温かく 起きている）a heat that's older than our names寄,（私たちの名前より 古い熱）it doesn't say,（何も言わない）and nobody here needs a phrase,（ここでは誰も ひと言もいらない）we share one place.（ひとつの場所を 分け合ってる）

An old woman nods at me, slow,（おばあさんが ゆっくり 私にうなずく）I nod, eyes closed,（目を閉じたまま うなずき返す）a man shifts over on the stone,（男の人が 岩の上で 少し詰めてくれる）the water's gold.（お湯は金色）

I don't know thank you, sorry, kind,（ありがとうも ごめんも ご親切にも 知らない）so I just smile,（だから ほほえむだけ）and three wet faces crinkle, bright,（濡れた三つの顔が くしゃっと明るくなる）no need to try.（頑張らなくていいんだよ）

For once my job is out of reach,（今日だけは 仕事も ここまで届かない）and I'm at ease,（ほっとしてる）nothing to carry, none to keep,（運ぶものも 抱えるものもない）just me, and steam.（私と 湯気だけ）Steam has no accent, nor does skin,（湯気に訛りはない 肌にもない）we're kin, we sit.（みんな身内 並んで座る）

Steam has no accent, and the snow（湯気に訛りはない 降る雪は）hits it and goes,（湯気に触れて 消えていく）and all these faces, eyes half-closed,（半分目を閉じた みんなの顔が）all say the most.（どんな言葉より 語ってる）
